Check the admission requirements of the course(s) you want to apply to

What do I need?

Please note that Iceland’s upper education system has no systematic approach when it comes to refugees and education. You may find that the respective school’s website has no information on refugees, simply because such information does not exist. In that case we urge you to contact the school directly, these matters tend to be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Gather all documents that are relevant for your programme

In the cases of people who are missing proof of previous education, an interview with ENIC/NARIC might be needed. The ENIC/NARIC office provides guidance on the evaluation of qualifications and serve as the main information point on the recognition of qualifications at a national level. They will help you write up a summary of your experience and that will help with the application process. For further information and assistance, here is a link their website.

Fulfill language requirements

Most undergraduate courses in Iceland are only taught in Icelandic, people who lack both English and Icelandic proficiency tend to get stuck in between two systems. There are however some courses available in English but make sure you check the website of each University to make sure. English speaking applicants looking for postgraduate degrees are in luck, a large selection of postgraduate courses are taught in English. Applicants will need to refer to each school’s webpage.
Check the language requirements in the What do I need? section.

Send application

In Iceland the applications processes for each school are via the respective school’s web page. Deadlines for each university will vary, so make sure to refer to websites. If you’re in trouble, email the school or even book an appointment to see a school adviser who will be able to advise you. You can also come to our Application Café where we can help you with your application or go to the Red Cross’ Open House.
